First post!

Well, this is it, post number one. I’ve worked on this site for the last few weeks, and thought it was about time to put it live!

The site’s powered by Wordpress, it’s light weight and flexible and I’ve it used it several times before, most successfully with ZAPCULT.

I wanted to keep my installation as simple as possible, but it’s so hard to resist all the great plugins out there! I’ve only used two:

Feed List is really cool, you can display any feed on your Wordpress blog so easily, I’ve used to show the latest posts on my other site - but that’s not all you can do. If you really want to have some fun, you can combine feeds and then display a random list of links from them, will write a post about it at some stage.

Highlight Current Category is one of those plugins that makes you wonder why the functionality wasn’t in Wordpress in the first place. I think that indicating the page/section that a user is on in your navigation is a fundamental thing. This plugin provides you with a class attribute which is only used when you are actually visiting a particular section, allowing you to “highlight the current category”. I think it’s a nice little touch, only trouble is it does not persist down to the article level… i.e. if you click to view an article within a category the class is no longer applied. To get round this you have to do a bit of work, which I’ll talk about in my next post.
